VIENNA STATE OPERA: Season 2010

A night out at the Vienna State Opera house is to experience opera the way the authors and composers intended. In glorious surroundings, it attracts the creme de la creme of international opera stars, has a hugely diverse and vast repertory, exceptional acoustics, and is home to the universally celebrated Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. No wonder it is one of the most revered opera houses in the world!

This is one of the most impressive experiences to be had in Vienna. The graceful Opera House opened in 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni and has had a history as aptly dramatic and exciting as the opera itself. Its design was subjected to such heavy criticism at the time that one of its two architects committed suicide before the opening, while the other died of grief shortly after. But the problems didn't stop there; it was directly hit by allied bombs in World War II but was reopened in 1955 and is now, luckily for us, fully restored to its original grandeur. The venue's impressive neo-romantic facades and its sweeping chandelier-lit Grand staircase of marble provide a suitably majestic atmosphere for the opera experience.
