HAMBURG STATE OPERA: Season 2009 - 2010

VENUE
The original Hamburg Opera House was founded on 2 January 1678 and its inaugaration represented a major move towards emancipation: for the first time, music existed in an environment that had nothing to do with religion and worship. In 1703, Handel was taken on as a violinist and harpsichordist and soon his operas began to appear. In 1705, the Hamburg Opera House staged the world première of his opera Nero.
It 1826, a new theatre was built to replace the ageing wooden Opera House. It has since been renovated on various ocassions. On 2 August 1943 the auditorium was completely destroyed during air-raids. The current building was opened on 15 August 1955 with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
