BUDAPEST BY HOT AIR BALLOON: all year |
The Budapest Eye, is tethered to the roofgarden of the the WestEnd City Center shopping mall. As its name suggests, it's a unique observation point in the middle of the city. But why is it unique? Usually observation points remind us of fixed places, but the Budapest Eye moves!
Imagine a machine, which resembles a hot-air balloon, but combines both classic and modern forms. Its appearance is classical like the gas balloons of old times, but at the same time it's modern, since it?s made of the finest materials produced by top technology in England. Its designer is Per Lindstrand, legendary figure of ballooning.
The Budapest Eye, during operation, goes up to 150 meters, while it is tethered to the ground. It works as an elevator or lift. The lifting power of the helium in the 22 meter diameter sphere makes the HiFlyer rise and the nine and a half ton winch in the winch room moving the cable attached to the gas balloon pulls it back. In the air, the gondola and the sphere move sideways as well, making it feel as though you're flying. You can walk around in the gondola, whose side, a meter high, is covered, for a better view, with netting. Flight safety is guaranteed by professional balloon pilots.
The Budapest Eye is an unforgettable experience and gives you a great picture of the city?s sites and a wonderful panoramic view. As there are no tall buildings in Budapest, this is the only place from which the entire city can be seen. The Buda side is especially pretty from the Citadell through the Castle and the Fishermen?s Bastion to Hármashatárhegy, with the Danube, the bridges, the Parliament and Margit Island in the foreground. Even the Basilika, Heros? Square and Vajdahunyad Castle can be seen from the gondola. In normal weather conditions the outskirts of the city and neighbouring villages can be spotted as well. The Budapest Eye spends around 20 minutes in the air.
If you're peckish before or after your flight The Balloon Club Café, just beside the HiFlyer, offers drinks (alcoholic and soft ) as well as sandwiches. It can also be booked for up to 80 people.
